Ayrshire College students behind growing record label

Sound Production students at Ayrshire College are making big noises in the music industry by running their own record label and PR company from the College’s Ayr Campus.

Students at the College have embraced the ambitious challenge of signing an Ayrshire band to Sun Turtle Records, Mannequin Mannequin, and recording their double A single ‘Sunburn’ - which will be on sale from Saturday 19 May.

The hard work does not stop there though, as the students continue to push the single out through High Tide PR. Already the students have earned airplay on Vic Galloway’s BBC Radio Scotland programme, and the acclaimed music magazine Clash’s website.

Sun Turtle Records was created last year to give Ayrshire musicians an opportunity to record and release original music while at the same time giving Sound Production students at Ayrshire College real experience of the music industry.

The record label has evolved this year thanks to increased funding from the Ayrshire College Foundation and its Innovating for Learning Fund.

This fund encourages creativity and improvement in the delivery of learning and services at Ayrshire College to support learning.

One group of Sound Production students is behind the record label, with roles ranging from marketing and talent scouting to handling all of the legal complexities and distribution.

The other group of students handle the PR side and taking on the responsibilities of event management.

Last year the artist signed to Sun Turtle Records was a current Ayrshire College student, Shanna, who also achieved national radio plays with her song ‘Survivor’.

This time the students have signed Mannequin Mannequin - who are an already established Ayrshire band that had no prior links to the College.

Mannequin Mannequin will perform at the Tartan Suite in Kilmarnock on Saturday 19 May to promote their new single. Tickets are available from £6.

Murray Baxter said "This is the second year I've been involved with Sun Turtle Records and High Tide PR. The drive and passion shown by our students is admirable as they have taken on real job roles, in a real business, gaining experience in the music industry. We have taken a huge step from our first year of running the label and long may it continue this year and in the years to come."

Taylor Stevenson said "Working with Sun Turtle Records this year has been nothing but positive. Being a part of the marketing team, our group and class as a whole have worked hard throughout the year in order to provide a high-quality result that we are happy with. The record label has given us a great insight into the music industry which will follow us into our future careers."
