Officers at Troon beach were delighted to welcome colleagues from the Air Support Unit with one of Police Scotland’s new RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) devices.
The device is fitted with a camera system similar to the police helicopter and enabled officers on the ground to monitor the movement of people on the beach and enhance the deployment of resources.
Chief Inspector Brian Anderson, Area Commander at South Ayrshire, said:
“The RPAS was used for the first time at Troon Beach today and provided additional information to support our Safer Shores operation.
"The good weather brought lots of visitors to the beach and the use of the RPAS was an excellent additional tool to ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone visiting. The RPAS was used together with the deployment of officers on foot patrol.
“Many members of the public showed interest in the device which is quite a sight when landing and taking off. The officers from the Air Support Unit were more than happy to engage with the public about the device and I would like to thank them for attending today”.
The device will be used for future operations at Troon Beach and elsewhere in South Ayrshire.
