Young people from across South Ayrshire are being invited to step up and make their mark as a leading breakdance competition comes to Ayr.
Fresh off the back of a major event in Glasgow, Resurgence will put competitors face-to-face on 30 September. Since the first edition in 2015, Resurgence has grown to become one of Scotland's most anticipated dance events. Dancers will take part in a 1vs1 competition to win £150 alongside other prizes from sponsors. The event is a co-promotion between Resurgence and the South Ayrshire Arts Partnership and follows a number of taster sessions which took place in Ayr, Girvan, and Maybole last year. Breaking, the proper term for Breakdance, is the dance element of Hip Hop Culture. Which spawned from the ghettos of New York in the early 70's as a tool of expression and empowerment for young people. Since its inception, it has become a global culture unifying young people and adults of all races and religions – through a myriad of events and community projects. Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism & Leisure said he expected the event to bring Ayr Town Hall to life, "This event is a great example of something different being brought to South Ayrshire to open up opportunities for young people to compete in a high profile event. "An inclusive competition for boys and girls the event will mix music and dance for this one-off event, which we're promoting in partnership with the South Ayrshire Arts Partnership. "I'm pretty sure this is the first time we've welcomed hip hop to the town hall but it's a welcome addition to our regular events and I'd like to wish everyone involved the best of luck ahead of the big day." Resurgence was a vision created by Chaz Bonnar, who became the youngest person in 2014 to be awarded a Travelling Fellowship from Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. His research took him across America to learn the positive benefits of Breaking and Hip Hop culture on young people from deprived background. Chaz said he was gearing up for a cracking event, "Breaking's a great way for young people to get involved in healthy and positive activity. Everybody should have the opportunity to engage with it. "At our last event in Glasgow we had competitors travel from across Scotland and overseas, and we're looking forward to bringing Resurgence to Ayr for its first edition. "The atmosphere is electric at these events with people of all backgrounds mixing together and having a great time, so we hope to see you there!" Entry is £5 for competitors and £7 for spectators, with tickets available on the door.
