The Council has donated £5,000 to the Ayrshire Hospice thanks to the generosity of bereaved families who allowed metal implants to be recovered and then recycled following cremations at Masonhill Crematorium.
The Council is a member of the UK Crematoria recycling metals scheme, which means that with the permission of the deceased person's family, any leftover metals can be recycled and the money used to help good causes in Ayrshire.
Ayrshire Hospice is a charity that helps adults throughout Ayrshire and Arran with life-limiting illness such as cancer, neurological conditions, end stage heart failure and lung disease.
The charity not only looks after people’s physical needs but also their emotional and social needs too. Family members, close friends and carers are also supported both during a person’s illness and following bereavement.
South Ayrshire Depute Provost William Grant said: "The charity relies on the generosity of supporters like the Council so I’m sure this donation will make a big difference to those receiving care through the Hospice and their families.”
Councillor Ian Cochrane, Environment Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “The generosity of the families is very much appreciated and we are thankful that even at a time of grief, they have thought about others.”
Ron Swanson, Assistant Fundraising Manager at the Ayrshire Hospice said, “We are extremely grateful to South Ayrshire Council for this meaningful contribution to the Ayrshire Hospice.
“This donation will go directly towards helping us continue to provide specialist care and support to patients and families affected by life-limiting illness. Our charity relies hugely on the kindness and generosity of local supporters and this significant support from South Ayrshire Council, one of our charity partners, is truly valued.”
