16 community groups and organisations in Ayr South and Coylton are celebrating after landing fresh funding to help support their work. Nearly 390 people turned out to take part in the latest event aimed at getting more people actively involved in local decision making.
Among the successful projects: New uniforms for the South Ayrshire School Clothing Bank, revamping paths in Castlehill Woods, intergenerational cooking through the Ayrshire Women's Hub, a cycle refurbishment project in the Kyle Centre, portable floodlighting for the Coylton Football Club 2004's, and new choir to get people with ill health out and about.
Up to £42,000 was available at the Ayr South and Coylton locality planning group event. Groups could be funded between £1,000 and £5,000, with voting open to anyone who lived, worked, volunteered or studied in Alloway and Doonfoot, Ayr South Harbour, Town Centre, Belmont, Castlehill, Kincaidston, Holmston, Forehill Coylton, aged 10+.
The event was part of a new way to encourage people to get actively involved in local decision making known as 'Participatory Budgeting'. The money was made available from South Ayrshire Council and South Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership.
Councillor Douglas Campbell, Leader of South Ayrshire Council, said, "We enjoyed a fantastic response to the event and it was good to see a broad range of groups represented and backed on the day.
"Ayr South and Coylton Decides is very much a community event, with people from all walks of life joining together to celebrate the best of local life while meeting like-minded organisations.
"I'd like to thank everyone behind the scenes for all their hard work in making the event such a success, with the feedback from the day highlighting an array of positive projects are now set to get underway."
