On the 6th May 1668 King Charles 11 granted a Charter confirming the right to form the village of Girvan into a Burgh of Barony in favour of Thomas Boyd, younger, of Pinkill.
To mark the 350th Anniversary of this occasion events will be taking place across Girvan and South Carrick this year. A 1668 Group has been established under the umbrella of the Girvan Town Team, supported by funding from the Wm. Grant Foundation, and significant work has been undertaken by groups to make sure that this will be a significant year of commemoration and celebration.
An early focus will be on the May weekend of the 5th and 6th with a combination of entertainment, celebration and thanksgiving including the Girvan Folk Festival, a Songs of Praise Evening at the North Parish Church , RNLI naming event, May Market at the Town House and an re-enactment event at Stumpy Tower. However, each month of this year has a range of activities on offer #girvan1668External link
Information leaflets will also be distributed across South Carrick and beyond to ensure optimum publicity for this special year and will be available from the Tourist Information Point at the Girvan Town House.
Councillor Brian McGinley, Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said:
"The Council is always keen to work with communities to celebrate our roots and keep our traditions alive. Girvan 1668 promises to be a landmark event with the organisers showing what can be achieved when we pull together for a common purpose.
I would encourage people to get involved.
