Keeping safe this summer - Safer Shores campaign launched for 2017

Ayr's Safer Shores safety campaign is now underway! Running until September, this annual initiative aims to improve community safety and reduce antisocial behaviour in and around the Esplanade over the summer months.

Led by the South Ayrshire Community Safety Partnership, the campaign involves regular high visibility patrols, particularly on the Esplanade.

Police Scotland and the British Transport Police will also introduce a zero tolerance approach to drinking alcohol in public and fixed penalty notices will be issued.

The campaign builds on the success of last year's initiative which led to a reduction in public drinking as a result of patrols and increased intelligence and support from British Transport Police and Scotrail.

Chief Inspector Gary I'Anson, Chair of the South Ayrshire Community Safety Partnership said:

"In collaboration with our partners including South Ayrshire Council, British Transport Police and Network Rail and a variety of other key partners we are fully committed in ensuring that our beaches throughout South Ayrshire can be enjoyed by our local communities and visitors to the area. We will have officers on high visibility patrols throughout the summer dedicated to patrolling the beaches. We want everyone to enjoy the beaches however any incidents of anti-social behaviour will be dealt with robustly. "

Claire Monaghan, Head of Communities at South Ayrshire Council said: "Ayr is a great place to visit, especially during the holidays and the vast majority of people leave the beach happy and we want to keep it that way.

"We don't want the actions of a few people to ruin a pleasurable day out for everyone else, so anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. The message is clear, enjoy the beach and have fun but don't cause problems or you could receive a fixed penalty or worse!"

The esplanade has already benefitted from additional portable CCTV cameras and has been divided into clearly defined zones, allowing for an efficient and rapid response to each zone, if required.

Joint litter, dog fouling and noise nuisance environmental patrols will also be carried out on a regular basis and fixed penalty notices will be issued if appropriate.

During the holidays, the Council's Community Safety officers will also be delivering street sport activities such as tennis, rounders, cricket, golf and football on the Low Green on Friday and Saturday afternoons from 12 noon to 4pm.

There will also be live music at the pop up band stand throughout the summer.
