He told the conference in central London:

"Today I am announcing this government will make a new, free of charge digital ID, mandatory for the right to work by the end of this parliament.

"Let me spell it out: You will not be able to work in the United Kingdom. If you do not have digital ID.

"It's as simple as that."

The plans for digital ID have already been hit by massive backlash including petition and even from the Scottish Government with FM John Swinney who has opposed the plans for Digital ID and that people should be allowed to go about daily life freely he also said the role out would force Scots to declare themselves as British in order to get the new “Brit Card” digital ID.

A consultation will now take place before it’s then voted in parliament then implemented likely between 2028/29.

Lots of questions also remain around the plans including how it will work for older people and those who don’t have a driving license or passport but will still require a Brit Card in order to work in the UK.
