Prestwick Co-op set to change hands over the next few weeks as Budgens takes over

The biggest change for the store since co-op took over the somerfield store in Prestwick 8 years ago

The Co-op food store on Main Street will change hands this summer with English chain Budgens taking over the building with NO jobs being lost due to the change.

A spokesman for the Co-op confirmed the sale

He said “I can confirm the sale of our Prestwick store to The Food Retailer Group Limited part of retail investor Hilco’s group. An important consideration for us was that colleagues would have continued employment as a result of this sale, and this agreement ensures that colleagues will continue in their jobs and have their terms and conditions maintained post-sale. The decision to sell the store has been made as part of our ongoing store review process and is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment from the 27 colleagues working at the store.”

The Co-op store has gone through many changes originally bearing the Fine Fare branding before becoming a Gateway and a Somerfield before Co-op took the store over. The Prestwick store became a Co-op in 2008 in a massive £1.57 billion deal with around 900 stores changing hands but now Budgens is set to take its step into Prestwick taking over the current Co-op
