Nearly 200 of South Ayrshire's budding gymnasts have had their first introduction to competitive sport. The Council's Learn 2 Gymnastics programme recently invited participants from across the area to take part in a new event, held across multiple venues.
The first beginners Floor and Vault competition for Learn 2 Gymnastics classes saw 180 Gymnasts take part. The competitions were held in the gymnasts' normal class to allow for a more relaxed introduction to competition, with the experience helping to build confidence for future events.
The competitions were introduced as part of the Learn 2 Gymnastics development programme and were aimed at skills 2 classes and above focussing on individual improvement and participation. Certificates were presented to all, with medals and ribbons awarded for the top scores in each class.
Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture said the response to the competition had been fantastic,
"With nearly 200 people taking part there's obviously high demand for a programme that caters for people of every ability.
"We're committed to giving our young people the best start in life and to open up opportunities that they may not have had before, so this new addition to the Learn 2 Gymnastics programme is especially welcome.
"I'd like to thank everyone who took part in the competitions, and also to the parents, carers, staff and volunteers, who together helped to make the events such a resounding success."
Due to the success of the first competitions South Ayrshire Council's Sports Development Team is currently planning an inter-class competition for the Citadel in December 2019.
