Spectacular aerial displays are set to return to skies off the South Ayrshire coast after the Council agreed a new deal for the Scottish International Airshow.
A package of up to £450,000 will see the popular event return in 2018 and 2020, with new structures in place to help the event grow in the years ahead.
South Ayrshire Council has been the Scottish International Airshow’s main sponsor since the event was established in 2014, with £200,000 invested in helping to stage the latest airshow in 2017. It’s estimated the airshow made a positive economic impact of around £4.8million to the local economy this year alone.
Following extensive discussions with the organisers, South Ayrshire Council have agreed a new package that commits up to £200,000 for a two-day event in 2018, with up to £250,000 approved for a three-day event in 2020.
Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism and Leisure said the event was now well placed to grow, “With tens of thousands of people flocking to South Ayrshire to see the airshow, the event’s now reached an important milestone.
“By working together we’ll be looking to identify potential new sponsors, forge closer links with local businesses, and explore ways of generating more income from visitors to help make this showcase event a long-term fixture.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the event return to Low Green in 2018 and then to build a superb show in 2020 which will celebrate Scotland’s Year of Scotland’s Coast and Waters.”
Doug Maclean, Event Manager at the Scottish International Airshow said, “We realise that times are tough and I’m very happy that we have an agreement that gives the Scottish International Airshow some longer-term stability for the next two agreed events.
“We’ll be looking for more input from sponsors, local businesses, local organisations and the public to sustain the quality and scale for the airshow, which is one of Scotland’s largest events and which brings in millions of pounds to the Ayrshire economy.
“We’re looking forward to welcoming huge crowds to Ayr next year and the Airshow team will now get on with the work of delivering the critical three ‘E’s that we always envisaged – Education, Entertainment and Economic benefits.”
The ‘Scottish International Airshow 2018-2020’ paper was approved on 28 November, 2017.
