A saltire emoji is set to be released for smartphones next year.
Unicode plans to make Scottish, Welsh and English flags available from 2017.
However, it will be up to individual smartphone makers to add them to keyboards.
The United Kingdom flag is already available on most iPhone and Android devices.
In a message to developers, Unicode said: "A proposed update is available for public review and feedback.
"This new version adds a mechanism to support regional flags, such as Scotland or California, though the choice of which of these flags to support is left to vendors."
Former First Minister Alex Salmond backed calls for a saltire emoji in 2015.
