Pupils at Grange Academy have been awarded a prestigious silver plaque, recognising their work in the local community by the ‘Get Set for Community Action’ programme.

The initiative is funded by the Big Lottery as part of their commitment to the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It was launched to help young people aged 14-19 to make a real difference in their local communities in the run-up to, and during, the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Projects must be based on the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect and the Paralympic Values, courage, determination, equality and inspiration. Senior Grange pupils got involved in a wide range of activities in school – and in their local communities – working to promote physical exercise and sport.

In addition, they set up a very successful school basketball club, worked with local sports clubs as coaches to help develop sport in Kilmarnock and helped Annanhill Primary pupils make the transition to senior school through a wide choice of fun sporting activities.

The pupils were assisted by PE teacher Charlie Adams who said: “I’m delighted for them and it’s been a great experience.

“Without exception, every pupil has gained valuable life lessons in areas such as planning, organising and leadership, as well working out what works well and how lessons can be learned from mistakes.

“That’s a superb set of skills to take into further education, work and life!”

Councillor Stephanie Primrose, Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills added: “I’m really impressed with the pupils as they’ve gone the extra mile to help younger pupils and their communities.

“Encouraging people into sport and exercise can be tricky, but their enthusiasm and dedication has been infectious.

“I’m particularly pleased with the clever way the senior pupils have developed activities and games to encourage and support young Annanhill pupils as they start their journey in big school.

“That can be a daunting time, so making the transition easy and fun is a superb idea.

“This silver award is great recognition for their brilliant and sterling efforts!”
