Education at three schools in South Ayrshire is being significantly enhanced through a targeted improvement programme which is now in its final stages. The Council projects to deliver extensions and upgrades in Ayr, Annbank/Mossblown, and Troon will all be completed by early summer.
The £4.7million investment at Annbank Primary, Troon Primary, and Southcraig School in Ayr comes as part of a busy programme for the Council, which is on course to complete capital projects worth more than £94million in the next 18 months.
The latest projects to benefit:
Annbank Primary School: The £2million extension will create a new community campus incorporating a new gym hall, as well as a multi-use hall, that can be used by the community during the day. The new campus will also include the community library, accessible changing rooms, a new kitchen, substantial storage space, and new PE equipment and chairs. The main contractor is Prestwick based, Ashleigh (Scotland).
Troon Primary School: The £2million project involves the demolition of the former dining hall; construction of a double height assembly / gym hall / dining hall; a single-storey building for changing facilities, and kitchen; improved accessibility including a new lift. Internal alterations were also required to allow the new accommodation to connect to the existing building. The main contractor is Prestwick based, Ashleigh (Scotland).
Southcraig School: The £0.7million project links the two main teaching buildings together making it easier for children and young people to move between them. Other features include a new entrance, reception and office accommodation. Following consultation with staff and parents the campus will change its name to Southcraig School which reflects the management and ethos of a school rather than a campus. The main contractor is 3b Construction Ltd.
Councillor Margaret Toner, Portfolio Holder for Lifelong Learning said all three projects delivered significant improvements, “It’s an exciting time for the schools, which are already enjoying the benefits of this targeted investment.
“By enhancing the existing buildings we’re providing children with improved facilities that will enhance their broader education.
“We’re committed to working with our communities to help deliver equal opportunities for our young people and I’m confident this ambitious programme will help to leave a lasting legacy.”
Several other major school projects are also nearing completion in South Ayrshire. Tarbolton Community Campus and Daily Primary will welcome young people in February and March, while work to build a new Invergarven School in Girvan is due to begin in spring 2017.
