An exciting programme of published authors has been lined-up to front this year’s Readers’ Day at the Ayr Carnegie Library.
The event, which takes place on Sunday 8 October, promises an insight into historical fiction, children’s books, and poetry. Readers’ Day is designed to bring authors to South Ayrshire to discuss their work and future plans, while giving the public the chance to ask questions about the craft of writing. The event also delves deeper into the factors that inspire people to write and will explore the reasons people love characters and stories in the written word. This year’s authors have been confirmed as: Gillian Muir is a fantastic local author from Minishant as well as an entertaining speaker. A geography teacher ‘to trade’, she has travelled widely. Her ‘Louis Louis’ picture books are a hit with children of all ages. This series of books follow the exploits of Cockapoo Louis who was rescued from a Brussel’s animal shelter by the Muir family. Gillian has also written for teenagers with ‘Ten at last Ted’ a hard hitting coming of age story. Douglas Jackson from Bridge of Allan, spent 36 years in journalism before leaving The Scotsman in 2009 to become a full-time writer. He has written ten historical novels and four thrillers (under the name James Douglas), with his novels having been published in twelve languages. His latest book 'Glory of Rome', the eighth Gaius Valerius Verrens adventure, was published in August 2017. Alan Riach is the Professor of Scottish Literature at Glasgow University and the author of numerous books including his sixth collection of poems, The Winter Book (2017), which follows various other volumes including Homecoming (2009), and Clearances (2001). He has recently published highly-acclaimed English-language versions of the great 18th-century Gaelic poems, Duncan Ban MacIntyre’s Praise of Ben Dorain and Alasdair Mac Mhaighstir Alasdair’s The Birlinn of Clan Ranald and edited The International Companion to Edwin Morgan (2015). Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism, and Leisure said he was sure the event would be well supported, "There’s a great line-up this year, with our three authors bringing something distinctly different to this popular annual fixture. “We’re committed to staging these types of event in South Ayrshire on a regular basis to give people the chance to come face-to-face with published authors in an entertaining and inspiring series of talks. “There’s also the chance to pick up some new titles from the library, something that will help people connect with the one thing they all have in common, the love of a good read.” People coming along on the day are also being given the chance to pick up some new material for free at the Book Swap table. Anyone with books they no longer need but which may be of interest to others are being encouraged to bring them with them to swap them for something new.
