Why Ayr Needs More People Like Tariq Din

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Tariq Din, the Business Development Director behind the successful arrival of Black Sheep Coffee in Ayr.

Euan Ruddick - Editor

After spending time with Tariq and hearing his vision for the business, one thing became immediately clear: Ayr needs more people like him.

It takes a special kind of person to look at a town and see opportunity where others see challenges. It takes courage to invest significant sums of money into a High Street unit at a time when many businesses are retreating from town centres across the UK in favour of online trading, retail parks, shopping centres and major cities. Yet that is exactly what Black Sheep Coffee has done.

The opening of Black Sheep Coffee in Ayr is far more than the arrival of another coffee shop. It is a statement of confidence in the town and in the people who live here. It is a sign that national brands can see the potential that many of us who live and work in Ayr have always known exists.

During our meeting, Tariq spoke passionately about Ayr and its future. His enthusiasm was infectious. He recognised the town’s strengths, its location, its people and the opportunities that exist for businesses willing to invest, take risks and become part of the community.

What impressed me most was not simply the investment itself, but the belief behind it.

People like Tariq are the true visionaries. They are the individuals who create momentum. When one respected national brand commits to a town, others begin to take notice. Confidence attracts confidence. Investment attracts investment.

Ayrshire Daily News has learned that, through his extensive commercial relationships across the retail, fashion, beauty, hospitality and property sectors, Tariq has been actively promoting Ayr to a number of national and emerging brands.

From established retailers to some of the UK’s fastest-growing hospitality concepts, his ambition is simple: to encourage further investment into Ayr, create local jobs, attract more visitors to the town centre and support the wider regeneration and prosperity of the community.

He is also a strong supporter of independent businesses and regularly advocates for Ayr as a place to build, invest and grow.

This work comes at a particularly important time. The departure of TJ Jones as part of a wider national closure programme leaves a substantial unit vacant on the High Street. Ayrshire Daily News has also learned that several other businesses may be reviewing their future presence in the town as lease agreements approach key milestones.

While such challenges are not unique to Ayr, they reinforce the need to attract fresh investment, new operators and ambitious businesses willing to commit to the town’s future.

For years, Ayrshire Daily News has championed the businesses, organisations and individuals working hard to make Ayrshire a better place. We have always believed that promoting success encourages others to follow.

The arrival of Black Sheep Coffee is exactly the type of development our town centre needs. It brings jobs, attracts visitors, increases footfall and demonstrates that Ayr remains an attractive destination for both independent and national businesses.

What disappoints me is that too often we seem slow to recognise the value of people willing to invest in our communities.

The council and wider business community should be doing everything possible to welcome investors, entrepreneurs and business leaders who choose Ayr.

These relationships matter. They help shape the future of our town centre and create opportunities for future generations.

I often look back at the tremendous effort that went into securing investment and support for projects such as the Astoria restoration. There was a clear determination to sell Ayr as a place worth investing in.

That same ambition is needed today.

Ayr has enormous potential. We have a beautiful coastline, a proud heritage, strong transport links and a loyal community that supports businesses that support them.

The success of Black Sheep Coffee should be celebrated not simply because a new business has arrived, but because it represents confidence in Ayr’s future. It is also playing its part in promoting both independent businesses and other national brands to consider Ayr as a destination.

More importantly, it should act as a catalyst for future investment. The long-term success of the town centre will depend on attracting businesses that create employment, increase footfall, support surrounding traders and provide reasons for people to visit, stay and spend time in Ayr.

If we continue to attract people with the vision, determination and belief shown by Tariq Din and his team, while supporting those already investing in our communities, then the future of Ayr town centre can be very bright indeed.

At Ayrshire Daily News, we will continue to champion those who back Ayrshire with actions rather than words, because every successful investment has the potential to become the spark that inspires the next.
