Ayr man jumps from boat to rescue woman who fell into Ireland harbour


Emergency services were called on Tuesday evening but a nearby fisherman, who is from Ayr, already came to the rescue before the coastguard team arrived.


Alan Mcmaster, originally from Lochside in Ayr, now works on the fishing boats in Ireland and is being hailed a hero after jumping to rescue a woman who had fallen into Co Down Harbour, Ireland.

Emergency services were called to Portavogie Harbour on Tuesday evening, April 26, they got on the scene within 3 minutes, following reports a woman had fallen into the water.

But Alan had already done the job as he jumped in to save her life.

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched 2 ambulances and a Rapid Response Vehicle to the scene while waiting on the ambulance the casualties were being treated by Coastguard team members and Ards Peninsula First Responders.

Portaferry Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Last night while attending the local primary school in Portavogie the team were tasked by CGOC Belfast Coastguard to the harbour where it was reported that a person had fallen in.

"The team had got on scene within three minutes where a lady had been recovered from the water by a fisherman who had entered the water to save her.

"Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances and a Rapid Response Vehicle to the scene while waiting on the ambulance the casualties were being treated by Coastguard team members and Ards Peninsula First Responders.

"The team stood down and returned to Portaferry after the casualties had been taken to hospital."
