AYRSHIRE STUDENT’S STAR IS ON THE RISE

Former Ayrshire College student Kayleigh Haggo has claimed the Rising Star Diversity Award at The Herald and GenAnalytics Diversity Awards 2017.

Kayleigh was a student at the College last year, based at the Kilmarnock Campus, and won the award for the tremendous impact she made during her time on the HNC Sports Coaching and Development course.

Kayleigh has won three gold medals at the European Paralympic Youth Games, set 13 world records and four national age group records in swimming, race running and club throw sports.

She has used that experience to coach and inspire young people throughout Scotland. A fantastic ambassador of Ayrshire College, Kayleigh is a Scottish Disability Sport Academy athlete and co-tutor, which involves her delivering talks, seminars and coaching sessions to a variety of groups across Scotland.

She is also the Youth Ambassador for Ayrshire Sportsability which involves going around Ayrshire schools, businesses and other organisations to talk about the benefits of participation in sport for people with disabilities.

Kayleigh is now a student at the University of the West of Scotland.

Another Ayrshire College representative was also a finalist at the awards ceremony.

Steven Fegan, Employability and Engagement Officer at the College, was nominated in the Diversity Hero of the Year category.

Steven is a role model to students and staff at the College, having overcome both physical and mental challenges throughout his life. He is using his experiences to make a difference to others and has written powerful pieces on mental health for Ayrshire College’s blog and The Sunday Post, as part of Samaritans’ campaign to raise awareness of their 24-hour service across the UK.

He was up against fierce competition. The award was won by Professor Lyndsay Fletcher of the University of Glasgow, while his fellow finalists were the CEOs of Adopt an Intern SmartSTEMs, Joy Lewis and Stuart Macdonald respectively.
