Best feet forward for Walk to School Week!

Children across East Ayrshire said goodbye to the car and walked to school this week, as they took part in a colourful, wacky way to promote healthy living.

The pupils from primary schools and Early Childhood Centres were taking part in national Walk to School Week 2016 (16-20 May) and, each day of the week, were encouraged to walk to school in fun hats, happy shoes, bright colours, crazy hair and even odd socks!

Councillor Stephanie Primrose, Cabinet Member for Skills and Learning said: “Walk to School Week is a national initiative involving thousands of schools where parents and pupils are encouraged to leave the car at home for school journeys.

“It’s a great idea and has become increasingly popular over the last few years, as more parents, pupils and schools see the health benefits on offer from a short and gentle stroll to school.

“For parents who feel they live too far to commute the whole way on foot, the campaign suggests a Park and Stride approach – parking away from the school and walking the rest of the way.

“Not only will this mean missing the rush to find a parking space, but also help ease congestion around the school and fit in some exercise for you and your children.

“It’s also great fun – and we can all learn a lesson from it!”
