Christmas lights set to sparkle in towns across South Ayrshire
With the Christmas season almost upon us, communities across South Ayrshire are already gearing up for a busy festive season. Thousands of people are expected to turn out and support their annual Christmas light switch-on events in Ayr, Girvan, Prestwick and Troon.
This year the Council will be raising funds for its charity partner Ayrshire Hospice with high hopes that people will dig deep to help support this worthwhile organisation.
This year's confirmed events are taking place on:
Sunday 18 Nov: Little Stars Light Up Ayr (12noon – 8pm)Sunday 18 Nov: Troon Wintertainment (12:30pm)Sunday 18 Nov: Lighting Up Prestwick (12noon – 5pm)Sunday 2 December: Girvan Christmas Street Party (Times TBC)
After a successful event last year South Ayrshire Council are bringing back its Little Stars Light Up Ayr event. Following a competition linked to the South Ayrshire Youth Forum Awards, 17 year old Lucy Fawcett from Prestwick was picked to flick the switch for the festive lights and start the countdown to Christmas in recognition of her fundraising for Ayrshire Hospice.
This year's Little Stars event promises a packed day of entertainment planned for Ayr concluding Scotland's Year of Young People with attractions including the Little Stars Ayr Christmas Parade; the Wallace Tower Stage, starring young talent from across South Ayrshire as well as Nicholas McDonald singing in support of the Ayrshire Hospice , the Polar Express, the Newmarket Street Stage; Christmas pop-up market, Enchanted Christmas pop-up stories; the Arran Mall Bandstand Dancers; and not forgetting Santa's Grotto. Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Economy and Culture said he expected the events to be well attended, "We work hard to showcase our people and places and the Christmas switch-on events attract thousands of people to our town centres to celebrate community spirit at its very best.
"I'd encourage anyone planning on attending to consider supporting local businesses with shops, cafes and bars all open and ready to welcome large crowds in the coming weeks.
"I'm sure that people across South Ayrshire will enjoy the busy programme planned for Christmas and New Year, with the early switch-on events a great way to start your festive season."
