Firefighters to take on 30-mile trek around Ayrshire Stations for Charity

Firefighters from Ayrshire will soon undertake a 30-mile trek wearing fire kit.

A ten-strong crew from Kilmarnock Fire Station will walk the distance to the five wholetime stations across the area.

They’ll set off for their challenge on 2nd October and will be raising funds for West FM’s Cash For Kids and Macmillan Cancer Research.

The group will start their journey at Ayr Fire Station before walking to Kilmarnock, Dreghorn, Kilwinning and finishing at Ardrossan.

Watch Commander Gordon Cairns is responsible for organising the walk. He has been working alongside his station commander on the Workload Health Opportunities Life and Environment (WHOLE) approach to health and wellbeing.

He said: “We are doing a lot of work within the area around mental health and we decided as a group that we could challenge ourselves physically and mentally and promote the WHOLE approach to mental wellbeing and raising money for two important charities.

“We targeted £1000 and have already reached that target but we want to raise as much money as we can.

“It’ll be a challenge wearing fire kit as it will take us around eight hours to complete the walk so we’ve swapped the boots for trainers!”
