FIVE ARRESTED FOR DRINK DRIVING AT NEW YEAR IN NORTH AYRSHIRE

Police in North Ayrshire arrested 5 drivers for drink drive related offences in just over 24 hours this New Year.

Between 2305 hours on Hogmanay and 0135 hours on Tuesday (2nd January 2019) 5 men were arrested and charged by police for drink drive related offences in Ardrossan, Irvine, Largs and Stevenston.

Chief Inspector Colin Convery, Area Commander in North Ayrshire, commented "in December we had high profile launch events both locally and nationally to raise awareness on the consequences of drink driving - I am appalled that drivers still find it acceptable to get behind the wheel of their vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

"Of the 5 drivers arrested over the New Year period one was found to be almost 5 times the legal limit - 3 have been held in police custody to appear at Court and all have been the subject of reports to the Procurator Fiscal.

"As we work with our partners and communities to improve the safety of our roads these numbers are of huge concern. I would like to thank anyone who has contacted us to report concerns about someone driving while under the influence.

"I would also appeal to communities to continue helping us to raise awareness on the issue and to demonstrate, in conversation with family and friends or by reporting concerns to police, that drink driving will not be tolerated in 2019."

To report concerns about someone driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs call Police Scotland on 101, in an emergency always dial 999. Information can also be passed via the independent charity CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
