New COVID-19 test facilities to launch in South Ayrshire

Two new Mobile Test Sites have been set up in South Ayrshire to help tackle the ‘silent spread’ of COVID-19 in areas where the virus is more prevalent.

The test sites, which are operated by the Scottish Ambulance Service, are located at the Quay Zone in Knockcushan Street, Girvan and the John Pollock Centre, on Mainholm Crescent, Ayr.

This will allow a targeted programme of testing to be carried out on those who are not displaying symptoms of the virus.

Each facility will operate by appointment only and will be open from Monday 30 November until Friday 4 December, 10.00am until 4.00pm.

The tests are free, quick and easy, and you can expect results back within 24-48 hours.

Traffic management will be in place at and around both sites.

You can book an appointment online at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test (please select ‘No, none of these symptoms’ when prompted), or by calling NHS Inform on 0800 028 2816 if you don’t have internet access.

Morning appointments will be open for bookings the evening before, and further slots will be released on the day itself for afternoon appointments that same day.

If you can’t get an appointment to suit straight away, please keep trying as new appointments will appear regularly.

Asymptomatic testing is crucial to slowing the spread of coronavirus.  The introduction of the new Mobile Test Sites will make it possible to identify more people who are infected with COVID-19, allowing them to isolate quickly and limit the spread to others.

Councillor Peter Henderson, Leader of South Ayrshire Council said:

“We all have a part to play in helping to suppress the spread of COVID-19.  The addition of the Mobile Test Sites provide a further opportunity for us to break the chain of infection and save lives.

“The last nine months have been very difficult for all of us, and while more uncertainties inevitably lie ahead, it’s encouraging to see that every effort is being made in our communities to recover, and ultimately get back to doing the things we enjoy.

“I would encourage South Ayrshire residents to make use of these new resources, and give us a real fighting chance of coming through the other side of this pandemic as soon as possible.”

If you are displaying symptoms of COVID-19, you should book a test at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or call 0300 303 2173 if you don’t have internet access.
