Pupils learn about domestic violence

Pupils at Stewarton Academy have been learning about Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence and last week they had the privilege of being joined in class by Alison Di Rollo, Solicitor General, and Annemarie Hicks, the National Procurator Fiscal for Domestic Abuse.

The theme of the S3 lesson was ‘What is Sexual Violence and Consent’ – delivered by the School in partnership with Rape Crisis.  Sexual Violence Prevention Worker, Nikki Kidd has been working with all year groups in PSE over the last term.

Councillor Fiona Campbell, cabinet spokesperson for Education, welcomed the visitors to Stewarton Academy.

She said “These workshops offer our young people valuable skills and advice – to help them grow and develop into caring, respectful and responsible individuals.

“Pupils of all ages have been learning about the importance of maintaining positive relationships in a range of different contexts and situations.

“These themes form part of a programme of prevention workshops that are designed to complement the work of schools, other education providers and local policy and strategy including Curriculum for Excellence; Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC); Equally Safe;

Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Framework and Scottish Government Single Outcomes.

“It was a privilege to be able to demonstrate progress being made to our visitors last week.”

Katy Hegarty, Head teacher at Stewarton Academy said: “Good health and wellbeing is essential for successful learning and happy lives for our young people.  Working in partnership with Nikki Kidd, our Sexual Violence Prevention Worker, enables our young people to develop positive relationships based on mutual respect and gain knowledge to make healthy lifestyle choices.’
