Pupils remind you to register to vote
With only weeks to go until the Scottish Parliament Election, young people from St Joseph’s Academy are helping to remind people in the Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley and Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley constituencies to register to vote by 18 April.
On Thursday 5 May voters in Scotland will go to the polls to elect Members of the Scottish Parliament. This election will be the first time that 16 and 17 year olds have been able to vote for their Scottish Parliament, and the pupils from Kilmarnock and Cumnock got behind the drive to encourage people to register to vote with some giant ballot papers!
Fiona Lees, the Constituency Returning Officer for East Ayrshire Council, said: “Time is now running short to make sure you can take part in the Scottish Parliament election, so I’d encourage everyone who’s eligible to vote to take action now if they aren’t registered to vote.
“Research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are less likely to be registered to vote so make sure you can have your say in May. Registering is easy and only takes a few minutes online – just head to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.”
