South Ayrshire council in running for national award
South Ayrshire Council is on target for a prestigious national award thanks to the quality of information they give to their housing tenants.
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has recognised improvements the Council has made to information material given to people at the start of their tenancy. The result is that the Council has been shortlisted by the Institute for an Excellence in Communications Award.
Working with a dedicated group of tenant volunteers, the Council's Tenant Participation Team developed a new Tenants' Handbook and supporting short film (available online and on DVD) featuring Jane McCarry and Mark Cox – better known as Tam and Isa from TV's 'Still Game'.
The Handbook and short film were developed to improve the quality and accessibility of information provided to tenants at sign-up. Part of the success of the initiative has been the involvement of tenants throughout.
One tenant involved in the production of the Handbook and short film said: "We're delighted with the finished products. The film can't show everything in the Handbook, but we've tried to concentrate on the main things. This has been an immense amount of work but I know all new tenants will benefit."
Councillor Philip Saxton, Housing and Customer Services Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: "This project demonstrates just what can be achieved when we develop services in partnership with our customers and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the project.
"No matter the outcome this has been a valuable experience and we will continue to build on this success as we look to give our new tenants the best welcome possible."
Each year the CIH holds its Excellence Awards ceremony to recognise the innovative work of organisations and individuals working in the housing sector throughout Scotland.
Winners will be announced at an award ceremony on Friday 2 November in Edinburgh.
