Sparkling school team sweeps up national cleaners award

A team of cleaners at New Cumnock Primary and Early Childhood Centre have scooped a national award for their work.

Led by cleaning supervisor Ray Graham, the team were nominated by their manager Gordon Scott and swept to victory in the Association of Service Solutions in Scotland (ASSIST) awards – landing the accolade as ‘Cleaning Team of the Year 2016’.

Judges were impressed with the team’s flexibility in delivering a first class service to the school, undertaking different roles – from assisting in janitorial duties, free school meals initiatives and school crossing patrols.

The team also attended regular meetings outside their duties to stay in touch with issues such as health and safety, fire prevention, school maintenance, risk assessment and customer services.

Andrew Kennedy, East Ayrshire Councils Head of Facilities and Property Management said: “This is a superb achievement for Ray and her team.

“Their commitment and passion for what they do in the local community shines through and they can all be relied upon to do an excellent job, even in some challenging conditions, such as flooding when a local river bust its banks.”

The team have also been proactive in researching and introducing new, greener and more efficient products into their work and their productivity rates easily and consistent exceed national standards.

Council Leader, Councillor Douglas Reid added: “Every member of the team lives locally, as do their children and grandchildren and they have a superb reputation with local residents for really caring about pupils and the school.

“Their constant willingness to help out and take on other roles to the benefit of the local community is also a real strength and they thoroughly deserve this recognition.

Supervisor Ray said: “We’re just over the moon with the award. We really believe in what we do, have fun doing it and make sure we look out for others.

“The whole team share the same attitude of “being best for our school and community” and the ASSIST award is as much for the school, pupils, parents, community and staff as it is for us.

“It’s a great wee team and we love our jobs”.
