Success at South Ayrshire Sports Awards

The annual South Ayrshire Sports Council Sports Awards have just taken place. These prestigious awards which also incorporate sportscotland's South Ayrshire Coaching, Officiating & Volunteering Awards were a chance to celebrate sporting achievement across South Ayrshire.

The awards not only give sports clubs the opportunity to highlight and recognise sporting talent but also recognises the invaluable voluntary contribution from parent helpers, coaches and officials.

The theme for this year was 'Local Success in the Olympic Year' and the guest speaker was Susan McGilveray a member of Scottish Women's Hockey squad & Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Team. There was also an array of local talent such as Scott Robb (Powerchair Football), Danny Gibbons (Basketball), Rachel Hunter (Athletics) and Gerry Kelly (Blind Golf).

Luke Thorpe scooped the Sports Personality of the Year Award. Luke has been involved in martial arts since he was 4 years old and is now a 4th dan black belt. He has fought regionally, nationally and internationally and won gold in the Scottish Championships in 2015. Luke is responsible for the TKS Tournament Team that fight in tournaments all over Scotland.

The Junior Sports Personality of the Year Award was won by Rebecca Plaistow. At the age of 16, Rebecca is the current Scottish Schools U18 Girls Table Tennis Champion, Scottish National Junior Champion and Scottish National Ladies Champion. She is the youngest person ever to hold the senior title. Rebecca hopes to represent Scotland at the next Commonwealth Games.

Laura Nisbet picked up the Sports Volunteer of the Year Award. She is Head of Coaching at Ayr Storm Basketball Club and led her U16 and U18 women into the elite division of national league competition this season.

Laura was then appointed assistant coach of the U14 Girl's Scotland Squad which saw her continue to travel all over Scotland sharing her coaching skills. Three of Laura's squad members also earned international honours during the season.

The Young Achiever of the Year award was won by Filip Prsybysz. Filip is an 8 year old fighter and has been part of the Tournament Team for the last 12 months.

He fights in both Point Sparring and Light Contact categories and was named Scottish Champion in November last year.

The Young Person's Coach of the Year was David Matthewson. David has been coaching basketball for 8 years and runs weekly sessions for U8, U10, and U12 players, offering children the chance to taste basketball from a very early age. David also helps to run basketball camps in the off season and during the holidays.

Fallon Casey was named Young Coach of the Year. Fallon coaches basketball to the U10 and U12 girl's teams every Monday evening. Fallon's sessions are fun, safe, well planned, well led, and of quality skills. Her help has allowed the club's girl section to double in just a year.

Fallon's U10 team and U12 both were invited to play in Scotland's U10 and U12 National Challenge. With Fallon's help one of the U10 players was selected for Scotland's U11 Squad, and four others were selected as West of Scotland's Future Starz.
