The Gaiety get's ready for £2.4m make-over

THE GAIETY THEATRE is preparing for a £2.4 million refurb in 2016, as the curtain comes down in Febuary with the work to finish in October next year.

Planned work will include a brand new look to the 568 seating auditorium, which will open with a slightly reduced number of seating, but this means customers will have more leg room and fewer limited viewing seats.

The theatre was closed in 2009 for 'Health & Safety' reasons.

The running of building was taken over by The Ayr Gaiety Partnership, who re-opened the venue in 2012 after years of fundraising and meetings.

Now the venue has only £100,000 to find to complete the fundraising package, which will include a new stage, a re-shaped foyer and a new heating and ventilation system.

Elaine C Smith, whose show "Budz Eye View" played at the theatre this year, has been giving big pushes to the Gaiety's final fundraising.

She said: "The Gaiety has always been a big part in Scotland's theatre landscape. It has always been one of my favourite places to perform. I'm really hoping as many people as possible will support this fundraising campaign, so the theatres future can be assured."

Every ticket bought in the Gaiety for shows helps towards the fundraising for re-furbishments. This is normally £1.50pt.

It is believed the theatre will close after the 42nd street show which is on the 1st of Febuary, moving all show's to Ayr Town Hall.
