Work to expand Ayr Cemetery to take 14 weeks and set to begin soon
South Ayrshire Council is set to begin work to expand Ayr Cemetery.
At the end of the 14 week project, there will be a much needed section for burials and the interment of cremated remains with roads and footpaths to link these up to the rest of the cemetery.
The first phase will be to clear the site and carry out drainage and earthworks to prepare the area for the new road and footpaths.
The bulk of the work will take place between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm to minimise disruption for local residents.
The Council has written to those living nearby outlining that the main access for construction vehicles will be the entrance on Forehill Road and that the bulk of vehicle activity will involve bringing materials to the site and the removal of any soil.
Councillor John McDowall, Sustainability and Environment Portfolio Holder for the Council said: "The work to extend the cemetery is very much required to ensure its continued use well into the future.
"We hope to avoid any disruption for local residents during the works and contractors are very aware that people live nearby. We are providing contact details for residents so they know who to get in touch with just in case there are any issues."
