Ayr businessman Wullie Hogg claims victory in Ayr North by-election

Independent candidate and local businessman Wullie Hogg has been elected as the new councillor for Ward 3 – Ayr North following Thursday’s by-election.

The count took place at Ayr Academy, with the result announced shortly after 11:30pm on Thursday 16 October. Hogg, who runs the well-known Ayrshire firm the mighty “WSH Fencing”, secured the seat with 850 first preference votes.


Known locally for his successful fencing business and large social media following, where his videos attract millions of views each month, Hogg now takes up his first elected role on South Ayrshire Council.


The by-election saw a turnout of 27%, with 3,422 ballot papers cast from an electorate of 12,653. A total of 37 ballot papers were rejected.

Other candidates included Ian Douglas (SNP) with 790 votes, John Duncan (Labour) with 691, Andrew Russell (Reform UK) with 584, David Paterson (Conservative) with 195, David Petrie (Independent) with 151, Mason Graham (Liberal Democrats) with 73, and Orhan Bulikj (Independent) with 51.


Hogg was declared elected after the application of election rules.


The ward Ayr North covers Braehead, Craigie, Dalmilling, Heathfield, Lochside, Newton, Northfield, Whitletts & Wallacetown areas.
