Excited children from St John’s Primary School became the first to have a go on the new multi-play tower which was officially opened at Ayr esplanade today (22 August)
The weather didn’t dampen the children’s enthusiasm for the impressive structure which features a mind boggling six slides, rope ramps, climbing wall, tunnels and extra colourful lookout towers.
South Ayrshire Council is spending £260,000 on the shorefront play area and judging from the reaction of the children, the tower is sure to become an instant hit.
The new addition replaces a previous tower which entertained children for almost a quarter of a century before wear and tear took its toll.
Councillor Ian Cochrane, Portfolio Holder for Sustainability and the Environment, said: “The new tower has been taking shape over a number of weeks and I know children are desperate for it to open so they can climb, slide and generally let their imaginations run riot.
“We know that play is very important in child development and vital if they are to acquire social skills, so we provide safe and secure play areas which children can enjoy.
“As well as helping children develop balance and co-ordination, the tower will encourage them to get active which is great for their health and wellbeing too.
“Ayr seafront play area has always proved very popular and I’m sure the new tower will entertain locals and visitors for many years to come.”
