Ayrshire Football Teams Invited to Apply for Specsavers’ Best Worst Team Series

Grassroots football clubs across Ayrshire are being given the chance to star in a national football series as Specsavers launches its search for the next team to feature in the latest season of its popular Best Worst Team programme.

The initiative, now entering its fifth season, is looking for a struggling amateur side to receive expert support and guidance from some of the biggest names in football in a bid to transform their fortunes on and off the pitch.

The campaign follows the remarkable success of Essex-based Warley FC, who were selected for the previous series. After enduring a difficult season that saw them suffer 18 defeats and concede 81 goals, the club turned its fortunes around dramatically, finishing fourth in their league after winning 10 of their final 12 matches.

Throughout the series, Warley FC received support from former Premier League and FA Cup winner Micah Richards, alongside a host of high-profile sporting personalities including James Milner, football content creator Angry Ginge and former England international Joe Cole.

Now Specsavers is searching for another grassroots underdog club, and a team from Ayrshire could be among those selected.

The chosen side will receive unique experiences, coaching opportunities and national exposure throughout the 2026/27 football season, with their journey documented for the popular YouTube series.

Kim Bull, Brand Communications Lead at Specsavers, said the campaign celebrates the realities of grassroots football while also delivering meaningful support to local clubs and communities.

She said the series highlights the moments every footballer and supporter can relate to, while demonstrating the positive impact that investment and encouragement can have on grassroots teams.

Applications are now open for clubs wishing to take part, as well as supporters who would like to nominate a deserving team.

The successful club will be followed throughout the season as Specsavers documents their progress and attempts to turn one of the country’s struggling sides into a grassroots success story.

Teams interested in applying or supporters wishing to nominate a club can do so via  Specsavers Best Worst Team.

For football clubs across Ayrshire, it could be the opportunity of a lifetime to go from league strugglers to local heroes.
