The Waverly has started her winter refit programme at the James Watt Dock in Greenock.

This is part of a programme of restoration and repair that will see more than £500,000 spent on her this year.
She will sail regularly from Largs in 2026 and is also expected make some sailings from Ayr and Troon during the this summer’s Clyde Sailing season from 26th June to 30th August. Details of the summer sailing programme will be released mid-March. Bookings will be possible at that time.
Our video shows the main mast being carefully removed by Dales Marine Services. Unusually the foremast will also be replaced this year. Waverley was launched in October 1946 and went into service on 16th June 1947. This is the first time in her 80 years that both masts have been replaced in the same winter refit.
A detailed programme is going on to replace pipework and the sprinkler fire sprinkler system and many unseen parts of the world’s last sea going paddle steamer.
Waverley requires fifteen new Dining Saloon windows built and fitted at a cost of £6,000 each. Many major refurbishments have been undertaken over the years and while it has not always been possible to retain every original 1947 feature, her owning charity remains firmly committed to maintaining her traditional character wherever possible, even when this presents technical and financial challenges.
Paul Semple, Waverley’s General Manager, said: “Preserving the authentic character of Waverley is absolutely central to everything we do. She is not just a passenger vessel but a living, working piece of maritime history. Carrying out work such as mast replacement to the highest possible standard ensures that future generations can continue to experience paddle steamer travel exactly as it was meant to be.”
In the past three summer seasons the 1940s styled Waverley has attracted over 150,000 passengers in each short season.
