The local North Ayrshire library is calling on members of the public to donate bras via a new and convenient bra recycling point, located at the library reception to raise vital funds for secondary spread breast cancer research.

Introduced in partnership with charity Against Breast Cancer, the recycling station allows Saltcoats Library members and visitors to deposit used, new or surplus bras in branch.

Donated bras are then given a new lease of life by the charity, and donated to a recycling partner who will thendonate £700 to Against Breast Cancer for every tonne collected.

Any bra, even if the wire or fixings are now broken or the material has seen better days will be accepted. All bras can be handed in as each one is dismantled and disposed of correctly by Against Breast Cancer.

Councillor Alan Hill, Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing and Islands shares: “North Ayrshire Council welcomes the news of the new bra recycling drop-off point at Saltcoats Library.

“This is a fantastic initiative raising vital funds for research into secondary spread breast cancer and it is an important textile recovery project that is preventing bras going into landfill.

“As a council we have an ambitious target to become a net zero local authority by 2030, and this important textile initiative will help us to not only play our part but also to raise awareness of a vital cause, increasing the survival of anyone affected by secondary spread breast cancer.”

Donations can only be made during Saltcoats Libraryopening hours:

• Sunday and Wednesday: closed

• Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 10am until 1pm, closing for lunch and reopening 2pm until 5pm

• Saturday:10am until midday

Against Breast Cancer funds groundbreaking cancer research to improve detection, treatment and increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis. Every bra donated really makes a difference.
