Adam Smith’s debut children’s novel, Lexie the White Husky: Guardian of Joy, marks a thoughtful and confident entry into values-led storytelling for younger readers. Rooted in warmth and imagination, the book introduces a richly textured world where adventure is guided by kindness, courage, and emotional understanding.

The story centres on Lexie, a white husky whose town is suddenly and mysteriously stripped of laughter. Determined to restore what has been lost, Lexie follows a silver-lit path into the enchanted Silverwood Forest. Guided by Whisker, a wise tabby, and joined by a memorable group of companions including a forgetful owl, a mischievous squirrel, and a majestic stag, she faces riddles, encroaching shadows, and her own fears in a quest to uncover the legendary Laughter Stone. Along the way, the story gently explores the idea that joy is more than simple giggles, presenting it instead as something rooted in courage, kindness, resilience, and the power of sharing.
Smith’s professional background as a District Charge Nurse provides a strong and credible foundation for the book’s emotional depth. His experience in care and leadership is reflected in the sensitive way themes of reassurance, empathy, and emotional bravery are handled. These values are embedded naturally within the narrative, allowing young readers to absorb meaningful lessons through story rather than instruction.
Lexie herself is portrayed as a calm and relatable guide through uncertainty, modelling emotional strength without ever feeling idealised. The writing remains clear and accessible, making the book suitable both for independent readers and for shared reading between children and adults, where its themes can be explored together. The measured world-building hints at a wider literary universe while keeping the focus firmly on character and purpose.
Smith, who lives in Kilwinning, said he is proud to call the town his home and is excited to share his first book with readers.
He said:
“Proud to live in Kilwinning and call this wonderful community home, I’m excited to bring stories to life. I am thrilled to say my debut novel is here. As a nurse, I’ve spent years caring for others, and now I’m turning that compassion into stories that spark imagination.
“My mission is to inspire children to fall in love with reading and discover the magic hidden in every page. Proud to be local, passionate about storytelling, and excited to begin this journey.”
Beyond the immediate story, the book reflects Smith’s wider ambition to build a cohesive literary universe that extends into educational resources and creative collaborations. This forward-looking approach ensures the story resonates with families and educators alike, offering both wonder and wisdom.
Overall, Lexie the White Husky: Guardian of Joy is a warm, imaginative, and emotionally aware debut. Blending adventure with meaningful values, it delivers a timeless reminder that laughter is worth protecting and that even the smallest acts of friendship can light up the darkest moments.
