The Trading Standards Service is running a free electric blanket testing programme, which will run from Monday 9 September to Thursday 19 September 2019.
National fire statistics attribute many house fires to faulty electric blankets with blankets over 10 years old posing a particular danger. The type of tell-tale faults to be wary of are fraying fabric, scorch marks, exposed elements, worn flex or loose connections.
Councillor Jim McMahon, Spokesperson for Older People and Community Safety said:
“Safety in the home is paramount and I would encourage all those with electric blankets, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable, to take advantage of this free electric safety check.”
For peace of mind and to ensure your blanket is safe for the coming winter, simply take it along to any of the Council’s Customer Service Centres in Galston, Stewarton, Cumnock and Dalmellington, or alternatively, drop it into the Trading Standards Office, Civic Centre South, 16 John Dickie Street, Kilmarnock, KA1 1HW.
