A new exhibition showcasing a selection of Alexander Goudie's celebrated Tam o' Shanter paintings has been officially opened in Girvan. Eleven of the larger than life pictures, telling the tale of the Robert Burns character's famous ride home, are on display in the McKechnie Institute.
The compelling narrative series, beautifully realised by Goudie, was the culmination of a lifetime’s experience and observation as a painter. The official opening took place on Friday, 16 March 2018. The free exhibition runs until Saturday, 16 June.
Councillor Brian McGinley, South Ayrshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, Tourism & Leisure, said the exhibition was set to be a big hit, “We’re committed to making events like these available to as many people as possible, with art of this calibre a great addition to the local arts calendar.
“The paintings on show, part of South Ayrshire’s permanent collection, are testament to both Goudie’s vision and the richness of Burns text, perfectly illustrating that the story can be shared in many different ways.
“I’m sure people looking to get see more of this memorable collection will be well rewarded by a trip to the McKechnie Institute this spring.”
The collection is of such importance to the heritage of Scotland that in 1999 a consortium of three benefactors, The Fraser Foundation, the TB Hunter Charitable Trust, and The Souter Foundation saved the collection from being split up, and in partnership with South Ayrshire Council brought them home to Ayrshire.
Councillor Alec Clark, who officially opened the exhibition, said the event was a great coup for Girvan, “It's fantastic to showcase art of this calibre in Carrick's Cultural Gem, the McKechnie in Girvan.
“With Robert Burns having played such an important part in the area’s history I’d urge anyone with an interest to come along and see his inspiration writ large on this unforgettable series of paintings.”
