'Inspirational' leadership at Newton Primary School

The Head Teacher's leadership is 'inspirational' and is 'transforming' the school this is one of the findings in the latest Education Scotland Report for Newton Primary School and Nursery.

The report goes on to say the children are motivated and enjoy learning and that skilled staff are improving the school experience and the achievements of pupils.

Inspectors came to these conclusions after a recent visit to the school and nursery which included discussions with parents, children and staff.

The report describes the school environment as being 'very caring, nurturing and encouraging'. It says that the school's key strengths focus on outdoor learning, meeting the needs of children and partnership working with parents and the wider school community.

Inspectors made a few recommendations such as staff should continue their good work on raising children's attainment. They also recommended that the nursery should continue to work on improving the quality of learning and the development of skills and confidence in all the nursery children.

During their visit, inspectors noted several innovative practices at the school which it plans to share more widely. For example, pupils run groups to help make a difference at the school and in the wider community. These groups have helped raise funds allowing pupils to attend excursions and events.

Increasingly, the school uses real life experiences to support learning. One example is the children being in contact with a science researcher travelling across Antarctica, this is teaching them about our 'Frozen Planet'.

Douglas Hutchison, Director Educational Services said: "This is a very positive inspection report for the school and underlines the hard work and dedication of pupils, parents and staff. We will continue to build on this success and ensure that best practice is shared among all of our schools."

Fiona McAvoy, Head Teacher at Newton Primary School said: "I am delighted that we have been recognised for our commitment to improving outcomes for our children and families and taking the learning in our school forward. I have a dedicated team of staff and we are all doing our best not only to raise attainment but ensure the ongoing health and wellbeing of our pupils. I am so pleased that our young people enjoy their learning."
