Ayr's culinary scene has been invigorated by the recent opening of Spudbuds, a takeaway dedicated to the humble baked potato.

Since its launch on March 1, Spudbuds has experienced overwhelming demand, selling out of their signature spuds daily before closing time.

Occupying the former Thyme café premises on Alloway Street, Spudbuds offers baked potatoes and chunky chips with a variety of toppings.

Their menu caters to diverse tastes, featuring classic fillings like cheese and beans, as well as options such as crispy bacon, haggis, chilli con carne, and Cajun chicken mayo. They also provide gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan choices.

The community's enthusiasm is evident, with queues forming outside the shop in all weather conditions. In the first three days alone, Spudbuds served 1,509 baked potatoes, 297 portions of chips, 40 litres of mac and cheese, 17 kilograms of pulled pork, 200 blocks of Lurpak, and 32 litres of cheese sauce.

This unprecedented demand led to a temporary closure on March 4 to restock and prepare for the following week.

Spudbuds' popularity isn't confined to Ayr. Their engaging TikTok content has attracted attention from a global audience, contributing to a broader resurgence in baked potato appreciation. This trend mirrors similar success stories, such as the Spud Bros in Preston, whose TikTok presence has drawn customers from as far as Australia and South Africa.

The team behind Spudbuds, also known for the Tempura brand with outlets in Ayr, Troon, Prestwick, and Kilmarnock, expressed their gratitude on Facebook:

"We’re still so overwhelmed by the support everyone has given us so far. It’s always scary opening a brand new shop but we’re pretty certain we’re onto something good here. Thank you."

Spudbuds' success underscores the power of social media in transforming a traditional dish into a contemporary favourite, solidifying Ayr's position on the global culinary map.
