Jamie Greene MSP has expressed concern over the under-resourcing of North Ayrshire funeral services saying cuts to local council budgets will only add to the pressure.
This follows news that delays in North Ayrshire have seen families waiting weeks before being able to bury their loved ones after it was reported that there were staff shortages in the area.
Mr Greene commented: “Obviously this is a very difficult issue for many across North Ayrshire who only want to give their friends and family the send-off that they deserve. It’s quite concerning that North Ayrshire Council is now not able to provide services such as funerals because they don’t have enough staff. I have been contacted by concerned local residents who told me about long delays to burials do to an apparent shortage in gravediggers and a backlog.”
Those working in our public cemeteries in North Ayrshire do a fantastic job and we shouldn’t forget that or begin assigning blame but we must bring these delays back down to reasonable levels.”
