With just over a month to go until work begins to build the exciting new Barony Campus in Cumnock, local pupils are all set to take part in an archaeology dig on the site.
The dig is part of the planning requirements and has to be completed before formal works can begin.
East Ayrshire is an area rich in history and pre-history and pupils have already been active in similar projects in their local areas, including digs at Arklowdun Castle, near Newmilns and at the old parish church in Dalrymple.
In September 2017, the remains of a pre-historic home dating back 6,000 years were also unearthed in a field near Hillhouse farm in Kilmarnock.
Councillor Fiona Campbell, Cabinet Member for Skills and Learning said:
“We have a strong track record for delivering high quality educational experiences outwith the classroom, building skills and experiences as well as bringing learning to life.
“As a former history teacher, I find it fascinating that pupils whose educational futures will be shaped in the news schools at the campus will get a glimpse into the ancient past on the same site.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what is unearthed during this project and maybe any artefacts found might be exhibited in the new schools.”
Excepting any significant findings, during the dig, the formal work to create the stunning new Campus is scheduled to start during March 2018, with regular progress updates on social media.
