Scottish Airshow - Running festival weekend announced as part of Airshow plans to expand!

On your marks... get ready !!

The Scottish International Airshow and Cannonball Events announce the start of The Ayr Running Festival August 26th and 27th 2017.

The organisers of the Scottish International Airshow have teamed up with Cannonball Events, a professional race company, to start a whole new weekend festival. The Ayr Running Festival will be based in Ayr and will be an event for the whole family.

Doug Maclean, Director of the Airshow, explained “We are creating a family sports festival based on the famous Lang Scots Mile course on Ayr seafront. We have brought in Cannonball Events to help us create a fun and challenging race weekend. There will be races for children, families and serious athletes. Our aim is to build the Ayr Running Festival to one of the premier sports events in Scotland and it will be based in Ayrshire”

John Lloyd of Cannonball Events said – “We see the Lang Scots Mile as an iconic event. Robert Burns himself talked of the Lang Scots Miles in his poems and Ayr has the distance marked out along the seafront in those easily recognised footprint signs. As a professional running company we are coming to Ayr to start fun family races and races for the highest standard of athletes.

This year we will run a series of mile races on the Saturday 26th August and on Sunday 27th we will stage the first Ayr Running Festival 10k race. We already have plans to quickly add to a half marathon and other races in future years. The courses will be flat and quick and we expect many racers from across the UK will want to come to Ayr and test themselves against the best. These are exciting and fun ways to involve everyone from school children to veterans.”

Doug Maclean said – “Ayrshire is looking for inspiration and we intend providing the whole of Ayrshire with the opportunity to develop this into another massive event. In future years we will run town centre events and plan to fill the streets with a carnival atmosphere. The Ayr Running Festival can bring many thousands of people into the heart of Ayr for the weekend before the Scottish International Airshow.

Local businesses and running clubs can help us build one of the busiest weekends the high streets will see all year. We will be based in Ayr but would like to reach out to other Ayrshire towns to get involved. We have a small grant from South Ayrshire Council which has allowed us to launch this year and we can offer any Scottish business the chance to get involved as sponsors or enter teams.

We are promoting health and wellbeing and at the same time promoting Ayrshire. Race entries are open today and we plan to have a fun running festival weekend”
