South Ayrshire urged to Switch off for Earth Hour

South Ayrshire Council is encouraging people to get involved in this year's Earth Hour.

This year's event takes place on Saturday 25 March and includes switching off floodlighting on many of South Ayrshire's most iconic landmarks and buildings including: Alloway Kirk, Stumpy Tower in Girvan, Dundonald Castle, and Maybole Town Hall.

There are also a number of family events taking place across South Ayrshire before during and after Earth Hour to show support for the world-wide campaign.

On the Saturday a fun filled Lego tournament will take place at Carnegie Library and there will be stories aplenty at the Bookbug group. There is also an Earth Hour Fair at Ayr Central from 1:00pm-4:00pm with lantern making, face-painting, meet the Panda, Junk Kouture fashion and much more!

The Saturday events continue at Belleisle Park with wildflower planting, story-telling and other activities. You can also help switch to renewable energy at Girvan Community Garden between 8:00pm-10:00pm.

Mike Newall, Head of Neighbourhood Services at South Ayrshire Council, said: "We're proud to support Earth Hour, an event which places world resources at its heart, but in a way which everyone can connect with.

"The simple act of switching off lights, computers and chargers, and challenging the way we think about energy can make a difference.

"Earth Hour events have been well supported in the past and we're confident that we'll enjoy good turnouts again this year."

South Ayrshire Council has been recognised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for four years in a row for its ongoing commitment to championing environmental sustainability.

The Council is raising the bar in 2017 encouraging local businesses, organisations and members of the community to take part in the celebrations.
