PARENTS across Ayr are being encouraged to prioritise their children's eye health this June during Child Vision Awareness Month, with local eye experts reminding families that eye tests are free for all children through the NHS.

The Specsavers team in Ayr are using the awareness month to highlight the importance of regular eye examinations, particularly as many vision issues can develop without children, or parents, realising there is a problem.
Good vision plays a vital role in a child's development, supporting learning, confidence and participation in everyday activities both inside and outside the classroom.
Many common eye conditions can be difficult for parents to spot, as children often assume the way they see is normal and may not mention any concerns.
Peter Carson, optometrist and store director at Specsavers Ayr, says: ‘Children's eyes can change quickly as they grow, which is why regular eye tests are so important.
‘Many vision problems don't have obvious signs and can easily go unnoticed. A child may be struggling to see the board at school or experiencing headaches without realising their eyesight is contributing to the issue.
‘Eye tests are quick, straightforward and free through the NHS for children, making them one of the simplest ways parents can support their child's health and development.’
Research suggests that up to one in five school-aged children may have an undetected vision problem, highlighting the importance of routine eye care from an early age.
Specsavers is encouraging parents to book an appointment if they have any concerns about their child's vision, including frequent eye rubbing, headaches, squinting, difficulty concentrating or sitting unusually close to screens.
