Ayr Sandgate set for nightly closure as resurfacing works to get underway

As part of South Ayrshire Council's 2019/20 road improvement plan, the Sandgate in Ayr is set for resurfacing road works, estimated to cost around £68K.

The busy Sandgate, which is one of the main routes into Ayr Town Centre, is set to be closed through the night for ten days on Sunday 9th June 2019.


The Sandgate Route will re-open daily during the works, from 6am to 8pm, which is when works will start again.


Ayrshire Roads Alliance, who have appointed a contractor to carry out the works said the work will be carried out through out the night from 8pm to 6am to reduce the impact on local businesses.


A spokesperson for Ayrshire Roads Alliance said:

“The Ayrshire Roads Alliance, on behalf of South Ayrshire Council, will be appointing a contractor to carry out this work starting on Sunday 9 June for 5 days.


“Due to the sensitive nature of the route and to reduce the impact on local businesses the works will be carried out under closure, from the junction with South Harbour Street to Fort Street, between 20:00 and 06:00 daily.


“In consultation with local elected members, a temporary two way order for Newmarket Street will be in place to allow residents to park overnight.”

Ayrshire Roads Alliance will temporarily close and prohibit waiting and loading New Bridge Street and Sandgate, Ayr to allow us to carry out resurfacing works.


Works which are weather dependent are scheduled to commence on Sunday 09th June 2019 and are anticipated to last approximately 5 Days.


Due to the traffic sensitive nature of the route and impact on local business we will be carrying out the works under a road closure between 20.00hrs and 06.00hrs commencing on the evening of Sunday 9th June 2019.

New Bridge Street, Ayr – From South Harbour Street to Sandgate

Sandgate, Ayr – Over its entire length.


Prohibition of Waiting and Loading 08:00hrs to 06:00hrs


Cathcart Street, Ayr – North side from Sandgate, Westwards for 28 metres

New Bridge Street, Ayr – Both sides from South Harbour Street, Westwards to Sandgate.

Sandgate, Ayr – Both sides from New Bridge Street for its entire length.


Access for emergency services, pedestrians and local access to properties out-with the works area will be maintained whenever possible.


To minimise inconvenience restrictions on Cathcart Street and Newmarket Street will be lifted during the works.


An alternative route via King Street, John Street, Station Road, Station Bridge, Burns Statue Square, Miller Road and Alloway Place and vice versa will be in place during the work
