Connor Elliot, an 18-year-old Ayr United supporter, has been named the 2026 Pride of Scotland Teenager of Courage, after overcoming a devastating cancer diagnosis and going on to represent Scotland at international level in amputee football.

Connor’s remarkable journey began in November 2022 when he was diagnosed with chondrosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer so uncommon that his consultant had only encountered one previous case. The diagnosis ultimately led to the amputation of his leg, a life-changing moment for the aspiring footballer.

But rather than allowing the illness to end his sporting ambitions, Connor showed extraordinary determination and resilience. Through months of recovery and rehabilitation, he remained focused on returning to the sport he loves.

Today, Connor is not only back playing football but has become a rising star in Scotland’s amputee football team, proving that adversity does not have to limit ambition.

A diehard Ayr United fan, Connor’s story has inspired people across Ayrshire and beyond. His courage, positivity and refusal to give up have earned widespread admiration from family, friends, teammates and the wider football community.

The Pride of Scotland Awards, organised in partnership with the Daily Record, celebrate ordinary Scots who have achieved extraordinary things and transformed the lives of those around them. Winners are selected from thousands of public nominations received each year.

Connor’s award is recognition not only of his bravery in facing cancer but also of the example he has set to other young people facing challenges in their own lives.

His journey from hospital wards to representing his country on the football pitch is a powerful reminder that courage is not measured by what happens to us, but by how we respond.

Everyone at Ayrshire Daily News congratulates Connor on this well-deserved honour. He is a credit to Ayrshire, to Scottish football and to the countless young people who will be inspired by his story for years to come.
