North Ayrshire Council’s Roads staff have been praised for going above and beyond during Storm Eowyn.

The squads, which work within the council’s Neighbourhood Services, worked all weekend to help keep travel routes clear. They removed storm debris and fallen trees from roads to help residents get from A to B when it was safe to do so.

The roads depot at Goldcraigs, Kilwinning, suffered a power outage during the stormy weather but the staff carried on working – sitting in their vehicles to stay warm and to charge their mobile phones to ensure they could respond to reports of fallen trees.

When the storm subsided, not only did they continue to clear hundreds of branches and trees, but they also got straight back to business as usual by carrying on with their regular duties, including gritting roads across North Ayrshire.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy Said:

"I would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to the Roads team who managed to keep North Ayrshire moving as much as possible throughout Storm Eowyn and its aftermath. Not only did their hard work help residents, it also provided a vital service for emergency services’ vehicles by keeping roads clear and helping to keep public transport moving. They worked tirelessly all weekend and their devotion to getting the job done made a massive difference to the impact the storm had on local roads and routes.”
