Cumnock Bus Station plans open for consultation

Cumnock’s Bus Station is set for a revamp, and East Ayrshire Council wants everyone to look at their plans and have their say on a series of proposals for its future design.

A public consultation has been launched, with a webpage and online questionnaire to allow people to look at a range of plans and give their views.

It runs until 31 January 2018. Plans are also underway for a consultation event, to be held in Cumnock in January, where anyone interested can come and view the plans, speak to the architects and planners concerned and have their questions answered.

Drawn up by Smith Findlay Architects, the plans include demolition of the existing shelter and its replacement with a new structure with a cantilever roof, seating areas and glazed walls. New paving and street furniture will be installed, and the area behind the station will be landscaped to provide a more attractive public space, with clear access to the town square and beyond.

State of the art digital public display information systems will be installed, including sensory aids for those with impaired hearing or sight. Public safety too is high on the agenda, with dedicated CCTV cameras, monitored by East Ayrshire Council’s Risk Management Centre in conjunction with Police Scotland, keeping a close eye.

Councillor Jim Roberts, Cabinet Member for Economy and Infrastructure, East Ayrshire Council said: “Cumnock’s regeneration in recent years has seen the renovation of many of our historic buildings, the demolition of outdated 1970s buildings, and the building of new shop units.

The Town Hall and local hotels have undergone massive transformations, and now it’s time to address the Bus Station.

“It’s important that our plans address the needs of the passengers who will use it, so that’s why we’re seeking views, to help us to finalise the design.

We’ll be running a public consultation event in the new year, but in the meantime we’ve created the webpage so people can look at the plans and give us their ideas in advance of the presentation.

“Many passengers from Cumnock travel into Kilmarnock Bus Station too, so we’d recommend taking time to look at the consultation, which is also running just now. We’re hoping that these initiatives will transform the experience for bus passengers in East Ayrshire and encourage them to make good use of our transport links.”
