Curtains up for the start of works at the Grand Hall!

Following significant work over the past few months, a start date has been set for the redevelopment of the Palace Theatre and Grand Hall in Kilmarnock.

The Cultural Kilmarnock project secured £20million from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund, supported by funding from East Ayrshire Council, to transform the existing facilities to create a state-of-the-art regional concert hall and theatre in the heart of Kilmarnock, representing a major investment in the town’s cultural infrastructure and regeneration ambitions.

And this week, the first major milestone in the project’s timeline was achieved as contracts were signed. Mobilisation will commence onsite during July with the main contract commencing on 4 August 2025 with completion in early 2028.

The main contractor for the refurbishment works are McLaughlin & Harvey, supported by an external multi-disciplinary team led by Atkins Realis.  The wider project team includes McLaughlin & Harvey, Atkins Realis, Keppie Design, RSP, Struers, Wardall Armstrong, Atelier Ten and Theatre Plan.

Works to the Palace Theatre and the Grand Hall include the construction of a new extension at the front of the existing Palace Theatre incorporating a new café and bar, reception and ticket office and improved level access to both venues. Both venues will benefit from extensive refurbishment internally and externally including improvements to back of house facilities and stage, public areas and energy efficient upgrades to existing heating and electrical systems.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council welcomed this news. He said:

“Today’s announcement of the start date is music to my ears, and I’m sure the people of Kilmarnock share my excitement to learn that works can now officially commence. It’s full steam ahead for a project which will not only transform the town of Kilmarnock, but which will boost our cultural offerings and bring significant economic, social and environmental benefits to all of East Ayrshire.

“Technically, this is a very complex project and the team has taken time to ensure every detail has been considered to mitigate and address these challenges.’

“This is a key milestone which marks the culmination of months of planning and coordination and shared ambition between all partners and I very much look forward to seeing this progress.”

These works are scheduled for completion early 2028.
